Photography Collections and Primers

This is rolling open call for photographers and designers. We are seeking proposals for collections of photography and we are also seeking writers/designers for general and professional books to be published on the forthcoming Dostoyevsky Wannabe Materials imprint. See below for details of the two categories of proposal that we are interested in and how to submit.

Photography Collections

We are interested in proposals for portrait, fashion, fine-art, architectural, scientific photography; snapshot photography, street photography, snapshot photography, lomography, or collections of 20th century everyday/vernacular photography.

Please submit your proposal to materials at dostoyevsky wannabe dot com and include the following and addressing the submission to Victoria Brown:

  • Please attach your photos as a PDF of 10-20 images compressed images or a link to a website/blog or even, at a push, an Instagram link; Please DO NOT send a wetransfer link because they are time-limited and we might not get to them.
  • Your professional CV/resume, including email contact details, any social-media accounts and personal websites;
  • A paragraph or two describing the proposed book;
  • Please let us know whether you'd consider this to be a full-length collection or more of a limited edition pamphlet/zine size book (we publish both)
  • Please guarantee that you own the copyright for the images.

We're a very small team but we will try to reply to every email for Dostoyevsky Wannabe Materials book proposals.

Important Note on Scope and Finances: We do not ever ask photographers for money to help produce these books and we offer a small net royalty on all accepted and published titles. Profit is not the aim here, we're of the belief that many books that we might think worth publishing may not necessarily be a huge commercial success but we are insulated by the fact that these titles will be produced via print on demand via Ingram Spark or (if smaller in size) will be produced as limited-edition zines/pamphlets/small editions. Also you don't need to worry about factoring in how the book will be designed as our experience as designers will ensure a high-quality product.

Graphic Design Books/Primers

We are also open to proposals for specialist interest graphic design books or textbooks/primers that cover design and typography in either some novel way or, if primers, some informative manner at a beginner or intermediate level for either a general audience.

Please submit your proposal, addressing it to Dostoyevsky Wannabe Editor, Victoria Brown, via email at materials at dostoyevsky wannabe dot com and please include the following:

  • One sentence overview.
  • Author or editor(s) name(s).
  • Annotated table of contents.
  • A paragraph or two describing the proposed book and the ways in which it might visually illustrate the text.
  • Image/Illustration permissions. Please explain how these can be acquired at no cost. Ideally the illustrations/images will be self-generated or, if you have no image-making skills, generated by partnering with an image-maker or some kind as the co-author of the book.
  • Two or three page-spread mock-ups presented as PDFs showing a mixture of writing and illustration.
  • Tell us what kind of audience you think would suit the book.
  • Your professional CV/resume, including email contact details, any social-media accounts and personal websites.

We're a very small team but we will try to reply to every email for Dostoyevsky Wannabe Materials book proposals.

There is no need to factor in too much about the book's eventual design because Dostoyevsky Wannabe design all of our own titles.
